Bill Arning Exhibitions closed its storefront in Kinderhook, NY, on November 23. After five years of maintaining spaces in Houston (2020–2023) and the Hudson Valley (2022–2025), it has become clear that keeping a permanent storefront is no longer sustainable.
Like many galleries worldwide this past year, the regular exhibition program is winding down to focus resources on pop-up projects and select art fairs. This shift will allow continued support of artists and the presentation of work in new, flexible formats as the art world navigates changing economic realities.

Being raised on an art history overflowing with religious and historical storytelling—stories museum educators could elucidate—was always captivating. Learning that a prince was a usurper or that a saint was martyred by being flayed alive was thrilling, especially knowing that early viewers were assumed to already understand these narratives, even though that shared knowledge has since been lost.
As storytelling in film and literature evolved to embrace unreliable narrators and multiple viewpoints, art likewise began to welcome a rich measure of ambiguity. These fourteen artists have woven elliptical anecdotes, myths, confessions, and dreams into their picture-making in ways that open-hearted viewers are sure to find irresistible.
