Presentational

March 16–May 11, 2024

Jean-Paul Mallozzi (Miami, FL)

Donna Moylan (Kinderhook, NY)

Kevin Sabo (Richmond, VA)

All representational art shows something, but the manner of showing those things can very widely. These three figurative artists cover a wide array of flavors of self-aware showiness. Admittedly the norms of depiction after 15 years of cyber-driven “look at me” culture have grown substantially less subtle and yet within that rubric one can find pictures that acknowledge their desire to grab attention without losing their complexity. Presentational celebrates these pictures  ability to continue to resonate in our hearts long after our eyes have left the exhibition space.

Jean-Paul Mallozzi (Miami, FL)

Jean-Paul Mallozzi has showcased his intimate portraits of close friends from his youth, reflecting his experiences as a gay Cuban-Italian, at both Bill Arning Exhibitions in Houston and at the Untitled Art Fair in Miami, where he is based. Since 2022, Mallozzi's work has shifted towards introspection by capturing moments of tranquility and romance amidst a backdrop of uncertainty. His latest paintings are characterized by their richly textured atmospheres and intimate gestures such as kisses and embraces. Moving away from bright acrylics, Mallozzi now works with subtle and nuanced oil paints, placing emphasis on delicate brushstroke and tactile mark making. Retreating to his peaceful home with his partner, Mallozzi explores themes of queer domesticity, passion, and solitude.

Donna Moylan (Kinderhook, NY)

Donna Moylan was born in Boston, then moved to Rome, Italy at the age of 19. In 1992, she went to live and work in New York City and today lives in the historic town of Kinderhook. Over the last three decades she has never hesitated to wrestle with the big themes of art history.  She employs strategies of depicting art-historically richly emblematic iconography, to make work in which she reaches for the timeless questions of where we stand in relation to time, storytelling and personhood in art, philosophy and life, She is unashamed of her theatrically symbolic languages and motifs drawn for all eras of art history, from classic opera stage designs, painted ceilings from grand Venetian Palazzos and even science fiction movies with pseudo scientific diagrams emblematic of the limits of rational thought.  Each painting is replete with poetic titles in ways that call to mind classic literature and films

Kevin Sabo (Richmond, VA)

The characters featured in Kevin Sabo’s extensive collection of works are sassy, crude, and fantastical, seeming to occupy some place between frightening and friendly. Sabo’s characteristic style, an otherworldly blend of colours and textures, presents as a satirical perspective on gender expression and power. Kevin Sabo lives and works in Richmond, VA and has a BFA in Painting+Drawing from James Madison University.
